Kahne and Westheimer - "In Service Of What?"
For this article, I chose to do hyperlinks.
This articles main focus was on service learning. service learning can be done in many ways including benefiting students of all ages. For this reason, a lot of schools try to encourage such an activity. The authors quoted President Kennedy when he said in a speech "...ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country."
In schools, educators make sure that they have a lesson plan that follows service learning. To do this they should be able to improve the community while having enjoyment within the classroom.
In the article they explain why its beneficial to the students. a few points are:
- Students become active members in different service projects that care for community needs.
- These projects help promote student's self esteem. it gives them a sense of a "higher-order-thinking skill" which will later help them both in their higher education and careers.
- Many of these programs are supported by the city they are in.
Further into the article Kahn and Westheimer talk about two service learning cases. The one I would like to point out is the case with Ms. Adams. The service learning project mentioned here was "Homelessness Here and Elsewhere." In her classroom, they examined social, economic, legal, and political factors of homelessness around the world and local school communities. doing so, they listened to speakers who came in, wrote files of newspaper articles and analyzed readings, and lastly developed action plans to raise funds for homeless shelters of their choosing. Sound familiar? I chose this case because it relates a lot to what our class is doing.
The hyperlink I wanted to do for this post is down below. I chose this video because it was cute to watch and it really put together the meaning of what this article talks about and one goal of what our class is trying to accomplish nicely.
Great post! I loved the video!
